The Pine Box Carrier

The moon met me up on the mountainside when my shovel made a splash in the sky
and the stars, they were dancing with the meteorites through the tears, gone fallen from my eyes
I bury dead flowers every fall
before the ground's too hard and my heart's too small
So, I kissed that old pine box down, mama, with my photograph wrapped in your night gown
Them branches be tuggin at my wisdom teeth, walking higher than I have ever been
and I've spent my life on this mountainside dragging boxes made of pine and full of kin
I bury dead flowers every fall
before the ground's too hard and my heart's too small
So, I stitch my clothes with my mother's threads and I spend my nights in mother's bed
Me and my shovel, we been through thick and thin and together we've dug many a hole
and I'll carry him brave from cradle to grave, he's the best friend that i have ever known
we bury dead flowers every fall
before the ground's too hard and my heart's too small
And we rest in the shade of a nearby tree and in the sun we bury our family
